The Influenza Vaccines Roadmap R&D Progress Tracker
The Influenza Vaccines Roadmap (IVR) Research and Development (R&D) Progress Tracker follows scientific, regulatory, manufacturing, and policymaking activities that, if accomplished, will accelerate the development of improved influenza vaccines. It highlights select research and policy outcomes that have been documented since the publication of the IVR in 2021.
The R&D Progress Tracker follows the framework of the IVR, and, along with the Universal Influenza Vaccine Technology Landscape and the Funding Tracker, guides and prioritizes progress toward next-generation, broadly protective, and universal influenza vaccines.

Background and Approach
What are Topic Areas, Goals, and Milestones?
Topic area. The IVR is organized into 6 topic areas:
- Virology applicable to vaccine development
- Immunology and immune correlates of protection
- Vaccinology for seasonal influenza vaccines
- Vaccinology for broadly protective or universal influenza vaccines
- Animal models and the controlled human influenza virus infection model
- Policy, financing, and regulation.
Goals. Across the 6 topic areas, 23 strategic goals identify high-level outcomes that will stimulate the development of improved influenza vaccines.
Milestones. The 93 milestones describe the actions required to accomplish each goal. The 35 high-priority milestones are critical to improving seasonal influenza vaccines, generating universal influenza vaccines, or advancing essential influenza vaccine R&D, based on consensus agreement among IVR taskforce members.
Approach. Each completed or in-progress milestone highlights select research outcomes that serve as evidence of progress toward improved influenza vaccines. Links to citations are provided when available, and statements that are not referenced reflect input provided by IVR steering group or taskforce members during annual meetings. The R&D Progress Tracker reflects the documentation of research and policy outcomes since the publication of the IVR in 2021.
